Maral Farsi, the Deputy Director of Legislative and Inter-Governmental Affairs for the State of California was inspired by Governor Gavin Newsom’s keynote speech at last year’s 2019 California Economic Summit in Fresno. The crowd was compiled of hundreds of public, private and civic leaders from across California. The speech highlighted how different and diverse regions of California are growing the economy, improving environmental quality, and advancing equity. Maral Farsi points out that California is setting an example the rest of the rest of the nation can follow.

Maral Farsi is proud to work for and with the great people of California. This gathering reinforced her passion as so much of the hard work of Californians was on display. Governor Newsom reminded attendees that California is the fifth largest economy in the world. He explained, “We are leaders in everything from manufacturing to technology to trade. We see more businesses start here than anywhere else in America – including many that go on to become industry leaders thanks to our innovative spirit, world-class colleges and universities, state-of-the-art labs, and a truly diverse workforce.”

While the mood was celebratory, Maral Farsi said Governor Newsom spread a message that inclusion was critical to continued success for California. The entire state must join together to ensure every Californian has the same opportunities for success. The Governor and his staff are dedicated to strengthening California’s inland communities. Philanthropic efforts of nearly $23 million in new funding was pledged to Inland California nonprofits. The Governor also announce that in 2020, his Administration will focus on shrinking the digital divide in the state. The Governor implored important stakeholders, education institutions, the private sector and government agencies to develop an inclusive “Broadband for All” for California.

Maral Farsi was originally appointed to her position by Governor Brown but has been excited to take part in the new Governor’s vision. Governor Newsom campaigned on a commitment to address the state’s economic disparities by region, an initiative called Regions Rise Together. He put this into action right way as he signed legislation to provide more than $20 million dollars to get safe drinking water in every area of the state that needed it. His participation in the California Economic Summit was another example of this Administration’s commitment to supporting California communities where there are economic disparities. 2020 will see a focus on increased equity efforts in communities where there are economic and environmental inequities, including an emphasis on job growth and climate change response that all Californians can be excited about.
